Another metric used to measure traffic is the number of unique individual visitors to the site. But this is an extremely difficult number to arrive at for a variety of reasons. What we can measure is the exact number of unique host computers that access the site (for the more technically inclined person, the number of unique IP numbers that are logged by CricInfo's servers).

CricInfo logged 4.5 million unique host computers that accessed the site during the period January to December 1999.

The number of unique host computers is the absolute lower bound for the number of unique visitors to the site. A very conservative estimate of the actual number of unique visitors to the site will be around 4-5 times the number of unique hosts - around 20 million unique visitors to the site in the case of CricInfo.

Estimating unique individual visitors from unique host computers

In an office with Internet access through their ISP with a proxy server on a LAN, there could be anywhere from 20 to 1000 users who access the net from that connection. So in this case we would log all these accesses as coming from a single host computer and the number of individual users would be anywhere from 20 to 1000 for that particular IP number of the host computer logged by us.

In an organization which has an countrywide or worldwide internal network and has a single Internet gateway with a powerful proxy server, this would again be logged as one single host computer (or IP number) where as there would be thousands of employees who access the site through that host computer.

Indian Mirror Servers
CricInfo currently has over 30 mirror servers across the globe hosting the entire database. There are 17 servers in the USA which form the USA cluster, 3 servers in UK forming the UK cluster, 2 in South Africa forming the South African cluster, 4 in India forming the Indian cluster and 5 in Australia forming the Australian cluster.
The Indian mirror cluster has seen tremendous growth in the recent months. It has served an average of 10 million page views per month in the year 2000.
