Mahela Jayawardene's woeful World Cup campaign was rounded off
with yet another dismal performance. Hogg had Jayawardene (5)
caught behind, a tough decision handed out to a batsman terribly
struggling for form. Russel Arnold scratched around for 27 balls
to make just the three runs, and swung one from Hogg straight
down Brett Lee's throat at the deep. Sangakkara (39*) and Vaas
(21*) took the Sri Lankan score to 123/7, adding 47 runs for the
eighth wicket partnership. And in the 39th over, it started to
rain heavily. With the rain getting heavier, the umpires had to
call it day, and Australia were declared winners by 48 runs (D/L
Method). Australia are unbeaten in this World Cup 2003, and they
now await the winner of the second semi final to be played
between India and Kenya at Durban on Thursday. Australia will be
defending their title at Johannesburg on Sunday.
