Australia slumped to 51/3 in the 13th over, losing the wickets of Gilchrist (22), Ponting (2) and Hayden 20. Ponting was caught by Jayasuriya at mid-off off the bowling of Chaminda Vaas, playing the shot a bit too early. Vaas struck again to dismiss Hayden, who has been having a reasonably poor tournament by his standards. Hayden could only flick the ball to Hashan Tillakaratne, who took a smart catch at short mid-wicket. Darren Lehmann and Andrew Symonds went about repairing the Australian innings, adding 93 valuable runs for the fourth wicket partnership. The highlight of their batting was the running between the wickets. Jayasuriya struck with the final ball of the 35th over, sneaking a ball through Lehmann's (36) defence.
