Canada v New Zealand - Action Replay
Chasing a target of 269 runs, Herschelle Gibbs and Graeme Smith got
off to a fantastic start under lights, hitting the ball cleanly
through both sides of the pitch. They added 65 runs in the first 11
overs, and threatened to take the game away on their own. Skipper
Jayasuriya introduced de Silva into the attack. With the very first
ball, de Silva struck, Smith (35) smashing a rank long hop to the
solitary man in the deep on the on side - Gunaratne at mid-wicket
fence. Gary Kirsten made a brief appearance, before being bowled by de
Silva. Gibbs was at his majestic best for the best part of his
innings, playing some stunning pull shots. South Africa wanted Gibbs
to play a big knock and finish the game. But in the 29th over, that
wizard by the name of Muttiah Muralitharan struck; Gibbs trying to
sweep, misjudged the turn, and the ball took the leg stump. Gibbs (73
off 88 balls) departed after the third umpire confirmed that he was
indeed bowled by that beauty.
