With Australia making their way to what was increasingly becoming
an insurmountable target, Pakistan began to feel the pressure.
And in the 49th over bowled by skipper Waqar Younis, things came
to a head. The first ball slipped out of Younis’s hand and
narrowly missed hitting Symonds, who was the striker, on the
full. All seemed to be fine with Waqar apologising and Symonds
accepting. But two balls later, another beamer led to a heated
verbal confrontation between batsman and bowler. Umpire David
Shepherd was forced to intervene and he severely censured Waqar
for his conduct, before removing him from the attack. It made the
day an even more eminently forgettable one for the Pakistanis.
