His partner in a 60-run fifth wicket stand, Andrew Symonds, then
took over. The well-built Symonds had just three half-centuries
in ODIs before this match. But he was to fix that record in the
most assertive way possible by the end of the Australian innings.
The Pakistan bowlers failed to intimidate him one jot. Instead,
it was he who was soon hustling them into submission. Shots that
pierced the gaps with brazen authority flowed, as he brought up
his maiden hundred off just 92 balls with the aid of 15 fours.
And then in the next 33 balls that he faced, he went on to smash
three more fours and two sixes, to make his way to the highest
score by an Australian in a World Cup - 143 not out.
