With Australia posting a massive 310/8 in 50 overs, incidentally the highest at the ground, their fans were understandably elated. It was yet another command performance from their side and underlined why they were the undoubted favourites to retain the World Cup. As for Pakistan, they, as it was proved 44.3 overs later, stood little chance of overhauling the mammoth target against an attack that included the incisive duo of Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie among others. Following the emphatic 83-run win, Ricky Ponting's men joined Zimbabwe at the top of the table in Pool A.
