AV: After your playing days you have stayed in touch with the
game both as the coach of South Australia and as a national selector.
How is Australia able to produce so many cricketers of the highest
class. I can readily think of two cricketers, Darren Lehman and Stuart
Law, who would walk into any one day side in the world. Yet, they
can't find a place in the Australian side.
GC: I think our domestic structure is very good. Our club
cricket and particularly domestic first class cricket is very
competitive and very strong. It breeds the right sort of players. In
the last fifteen years or so, the Australian Cricket Board has taken
definite steps to strengthen our grass roots levels. Identification
programmes, coaching programmes, league competitions and the
Commonwealth Cricket Academy which provides the finishing touches to
all cricketers in Australia. All of that has worked towards increasing
the depth of Australian cricket.
