AV: There is a famous incident of Geoff Howarth coming to you
soon after the under arm incident and telling you that he had put the
incident behind him and that the two teams would do well to
concentrate on the games ahead... How easy or otherwise was it to put
the incident behind you?
GC: Geoff Howarth and the New Zealand team were incredibly good
in the aftermath of the underarm incident. They were upset and angry
at the time and quite rightly so. But I think if anyone accepted it
well, it was Geoff and the New Zealand team. When I went out to bat in
the next game at Sydney, Geoff was fielding at mid on and I had to
walk past him to get to the crease. He walked up alongide me, gave me
a pat on the back and told me to put it all behind me and get on with
the cricket. I think it was a magnanimous gesture and it made it a lot
easier. Especially with all the media pressure and pressure from the
public. The atitude of the New Zealanders was very generous.
