On Judging the ball:
Question: Just answer me a couple of questions actually, one point of
interest for someone who didn't cope with fast bowling quite as well
as you. Deciding to stand up & play the ball, there is a point at
which the ball crumbs you, particularly with the bowler that gets in
at you, Walsh or someone who would get it back at you a lot. Jimmy
Cooks there was master in being able to stand up and play the ball, a
lot of people find that if they stand up and play the ball fielders in
the leg trap will become a problem. So we see batsman either let the
ball hit them or try to rise above, do you have a sort of height which
you think you got to get out of the way or height you'll stand up to
play, or do you like the idea of letting the ball hit you.
Haynes: No I couldn't seem to like letting the ball hit me because that
ball hits very hard ha!. I try to get the bat in the way, but you are
talking about the ball coming at you. I think it's interesting to
remember that, if you are facing a side-on position like that and the
ball coming at you it is very hard to use your foot in to stop the
ball hitting you at your body.
I find that the best position to be in is when your backfoot is
pointing just to the left of the bowler, then you are already on your
toes, what happens is that when the ball is coming at you, you got to
transfer where you can get the whole body around and let it go or I
find that what you can do is to make sure that you get can take your
left step out of the way so that you can then play the ball a lot
easier this way.
Too many people get stuck here and they got that straight right foot
and they go to play like this with a side-on position and when the
ball is up on the body, they just go behind and take the eyes away
from the ball.
