Thomson warns of shortest Test Match in history
CricInfo - 30 July 2001
Australian bowling legend Jeff Thomson is not only predicting a 5-0 Ashes whitewash for Australia but believes that the Headingley Test Match could be over in a day if the wicket is similar to last year's.
Last summer England defeated the West Indies in two days at Leeds and, believes Thomson, such is Australia's supremacy over England that the match could be even shorter this year.
"I can't see anything other than 5-0 happening, especially with Trent Bridge
and Headingley coming up. They're both bowlers wickets," Thomson told the Daily
Express.
"Headingley could be over in one day if the pitch is anything like last
year's."
Thomson believes it is time for England to gamble on youth in an effort to turn the series round.
"England are down and out at the moment. For them, I think it's time to try
the likes of Owais Shah. Just say: `You're playing the next few Tests - just
bloody learn something.
"There must be some young blokes out there with hidden potential that you can
just take a punt on rather than picking guys who have been tried and tested for
years but are a waste of time.
"Rather that than watching yourselves get kicked 5-0 with blokes you know are
failures."
