Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who made a typically gritty 54 off 159 balls, was the West Indies top scorer. The left-hander seems to have made a habit of succeeding against the Indians and he might probably have made yet another hundred against them had he not been forced to manufacture shots towards the end of his innings. One such attempt was to see him dismissed caught and bowled by Kumble, signalling the end of the West Indies first Innings. With India securing a 300-run lead , Ganguly had no hesitation in enforcing the follow-on.
