(1st Test: Galle - 14-18 Aug 2001)
Sanath Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu (33) put together an
opening partnership of 101 runs off 27.5 overs and laid to
rest the theory that this was a wicket on which batsmen can't
score runs. Jayasuriya was well fed outside the off stump by
the Indian bowlers who got punished royally. Jayasuriya saved
his best for India's premier bowler Srinath, smacking him for
17 runs in an over, which included a big six over point!
Jayasuriya went on to complete his eighth Test hundred and the
second at Galle. He finally fell, caught by Dravid off the
bowling of Zaheer Khan after making 111 runs off 138 balls with
the help of 16 boundaries and a six. The second wicket
partnership with Kumar Sngakkara yielded 70 runs.
