(1st Test: Galle - 14-18 Aug 2001)
Mahela Jayawardene (28 off 30 balls), Russel Arnold (20) and
Hashan Tillkaratne (11) got to starts but failed to convert
them into big scores. Sangakkara held fort like a true fighter
and kept scoring runs as wickets fell at regular intervals.
Javagal Srinath was the pick of the bowlers with 5/114, but
was guilty of being erratic and giving away far too many
runs. Sangakkara reached his maiden Test hundred and remained
unbeaten on 105 off 226 balls, striking 13 boundaries. Sri
Lanka took a first innings lead of 175 runs as their innings
came to a close on 362 off 107.5 overs
