(1st Test: India v England at Mohali, 3-7 Dec 2001)

Sachin Tendulkar was not at his very best at Mohali; there were brief glimpses of his genius as the little man played a few lovely drives through the covers and the on side. At the other end, Sourav Ganguly resembled the proverbial cat on a hot tin roof, clearly struggling against the short-pitched stuff from the English speedsters. Ganguly (47) fell for the trap laid outside the off, slashing at a short ball from Matthew Hoggard to give Thorpe an easy catch. Tendulkar missed out on a century making 88 off 143 balls, before being caught behind. The debutant, Sanjay Bangar (36), batted on bravely with his injured hamstring, while the flamboyant VVS Laxman once again perished to the square cut. India were all out for 469, Richard Dawson finished with the figures of 43-6-134-4.
