Again, Rhodesia were
deeply indebted to Transvaal for
sending another team up to the
country. This was managed and
captained by Algy Frames, who did
much to support Rhodesian
cricket. Again, several leading
players did not come, but Test
players Bruce Mitchell, Jack
Christy and Dalton Conyngham all
made the trip, as did Louis
Duffus, more well-known for his
writings.
Rhodesia included a
17-year-old schoolboy, Jack
Hayward, probably the country's
most talented player before the
Second World War. He was a superb
left-handed batsman, top scorer
on his debut, and many thought
that only lack of opportunity
prevented him from playing Test
cricket for South Africa. One who
did was Denis Tomlinson, batsman
and leg-spinner, who toured
England in 1935. Arnold Hyde,
also a good amateur boxer, was
another useful all-rounder and
brilliant fielder making his
debut. `Ken' Austin, who played
in the second match, is believed
to be the oldest surviving
Rhodesian cricketer.
Transvaal narrowly
won the first match against the
Rhodesian team after being 98
behind on first innings, but
applied themselves fully in the
second match, overwhelming
Rhodesia by an innings.
