Rhodesian first-class cricket in 1929/30Captain: Aidan CampbellAt the urging of Algy Frames and others, Rhodesia finally re-entered the Currie Cup competition. The main difficulties had been, and still were, distance, finance, difficulty of players obtaining leave from their everyday jobs, and lack of confidence. South African teams were also often unwilling to oblige by making the long trek northwards, so four of the five matches were played on tour, with only Transvaal, once again, providing Rhodesia with opposition at home. Jack Hayward, at the age of 19, was the most successful batsman, with 318 runs (av 31.80). Next were `Symie' Symington, in his first season (268 at 29.78) and Arnold Hyde (279 at 27.90). Bill Wood, with 19 wickets at 18.89, was the most successful bowler, followed by Henry `Pat' O'Reilly (20 at 24.80) and Stewart Sim (15 at 26.66). In the final match the future South African Test bowler Bob Crisp made his first-class debut, and took the wickets of the first three Transvaal batsmen. The team itself lost all matches outright, their inexperience proving too much for them, but the learning experience was considerable. Their first match, against Griqualand West, was remarkable: Griquas lost their first three wickets for just three runs, all extras, but dropped catches allowed them to recover to 602, with Xenophon Balaskas recording a double-century. Rhodesia fought hard right to the end, with Sim and O'Reilly in the second innings putting on 106 together for the tenth wicket. But the odds against them were too great, and all their matches were lost convincingly.
