2nd ODI: India v South Africa at Bangalore, 19 Nov 2005

Ball-by-Ball Commentary

Match State: Match start scheduled for 14.30 local time (9am GMT)

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the second ODI
between India and South Africa behind played at the Chinnaswamy
        Stadium, Bangalore.
South Africa won the first match by 5 wickets and with just four
more matches left in the series, including this one, it is going
to be a crunch match for both the teams.
A win here today will put South Africa in a strong position and
they will need just one more win from the next three matches to
clinch the series, and India if they lose today will have to win
the next three matches to win the series.
If India manage to win today the series will be back in the balance
        - So India have everything to play for and with South Africa just
one match away from equaling Australia's unbeaten run of 21
matches, it is going to be an absorbing day of cricket
        - that's for sure.
When little master Sachin Tendulkar takes the field today, he will
be playing in his 356th One Day International and he will equal
the legendary Wasim Akram for the most number of ODI appearances -
that's another feather in that already full cap.
Indian captain Rahul Dravid has won the toss and elected to bowl
        first.
South Africa have made one change to the team that played in the
first match, it's a forced one as Charl Langeveldt is injured and
he has been replaced by Andrew Hall.
       SuperSub - Justin Ontong.
India go in with the same XI, SuperSub - Gautam Gambhir.
Electing to field first was always going to be the preferred option
with the dew factor coming in to play later in the day.
The stadium is already full and the atmosphere is electric.
Smith and de Villiers are out there in the middle and it will be
Irfan Pathan to start the proceedings.
       Here we go!
0.1 Pathan to de Villiers, no run, good length delivery wide outside
the off stump, no shot offered
0.2 Pathan to de Villiers, FOUR, Pathan offers bit of width outside the
off stump and de Villiers carves it through cover point for a
powerful boundary, full length dive from Yuvraj at backward point
got his close but not close enough
0.3 Pathan to de Villiers, no run, fuller length delivery outside the
        off stump, defended
0.4 Pathan to de Villiers, no run, left alone outside the off stump
0.5 Pathan to de Villiers, OUT: gone! good length delivery on the pads
and de Villiers turns it away straight to Harbhajan Singh at
square leg - that's a soft dismissal, India off to a good start
        here.

It will be a treat to read the card if you are an India fan, South
African fans are advised to look away.
Pathan started off with a bang and Smith, de Villiers and Kallis
were back in the hut by the end of the 7th over.
from there on it was a colossal struggle for the batsmen - spinners
came in and tightened the screws really hard, between the four of
them (Kartik, Harbhajan, Sehwag and Yuvraj) they bowled 32 overs
and gave away just 95 runs.
Kartik in particular bowled a fantastic spell giving away just 16
runs in 10 overs but he was not lucky enough to pick up a wicket.

35.2 Ontong to Sehwag, FOUR, and again, in the slot outside the off
stump and Sehwag hammers it away to the cover fence
35.3 Ontong to Sehwag, one run, played down to mid-off
35.4 Ontong to Yuvraj Singh, FOUR, all over! not a bad delivery but
Yuvraj drives nicely through covers and India win by 6 wickets!

170 was never a defendable total but the South African seamers
started off well, Pollock in particular bowled like a champion,
and when he got Tendulkar early there was an understandable
silence in the stands but that was short lived as Gambhir
and Pathan started to milk the bowling.
Sehwag was due for a big one and his fiery 77 off just 62 balls
took the game far away from the Proteas.
Man of the Match - Irfan Pathan.
       Good Bye and Cheers
