Rhodesian first-class cricket in 1963/64Captain: David LewisWith Tony Pithey, together with David Pithey, Colin Bland and Joe Partridge, in the South African touring team to Australia and New Zealand, David Lewis returned to captain Rhodesia in what was to be his final first-class season. Despite the absence of four of their five top players (Godfrey Lawrence having been omitted from the touring team), Rhodesia won the B Section of the Currie Cup easily and gained promotion to the A Section for the next competition. They won four of their five matches outright, their only hiccup being a draw against Orange Free State, when they were behind on first innings but would probably have won outright if time permitted. The wisdom and experience of Lewis as captain was vital, and he succeeded in getting the players to believe in themselves as never before. Perhaps their most satisfying victory came over North-Eastern Transvaal at Pretoria. After being ignominiously bowled out for 47, their lowest first-class total, the opposition needed only 98 to win. But Lewis so inspired his team with determination and confidence that they bowled North-Easterns out for 79 to win the match. Rob Ullyett enjoyed his best season with the bat, scoring two centuries in his 449 runs at and average of 49.88. The averages were actually topped by John McPhun, who missed two matches due to injury, but scored 318 runs at an average of 106. Ray Gripper scored 317 runs (average 39.62), while opening batsman Nick Frangos had a promising first season with 238 runs at 39.66. Godfrey Lawrence showed what he might have done in Australia by taking 27 wickets at an average of only 11.07, his best seasonal average. Slow left-arm bowler Vernon Dickinson took 21 wickets at an average of 23.04, and leg-spinner Jackie du Preez 15 at 26.04. Lawrence's usual opening partner was Eddie Parker, whose 11 wickets cost 17.45. Wicket-keeper Tony de Caila consolidated his position behind the stumps by claiming 17 victims (13 caught, 4 stumped) in the five matches. CURRIE CUP TABLE (B SECTION), 1963/64
