Rhodesian first-class cricket in 1952/53Captain: Dave ReesRhodesia again finished second in the B Section of the Currie Cup. The overwhelming winners this time were Transvaal, who showed clearly that their demotion after the 1951/52 season had been a mistake and twice overwhelmingly defeated Rhodesia. Apart from the Transvaal matches, Rhodesia proved their superiority over the other B Section teams without much difficulty, even in the absence of Percy Mansell, touring Australia and New Zealand with the Springboks. This was in spite of their traditional failures in the first innings; three victories were achieved after first-innings deficits. David Lewis again finished top of the batting averages, scoring 421 runs at 46.77 each. Bernard Carew, from Northern Rhodesia, played his only full season for the country and scored 339 runs at 37.66 each. This included an innings of 179 against North-Eastern Transvaal, which was to remain the national first-class record until 1967/68, when it was broken twice in successive matches. The Leicestershire professional Tommy Chapman celebrated his debut for Rhodesia with a century before lunch, and finished the season with 275 runs, average 34.37. It had been expected that the bowling would struggle in the absence of Mansell, but the emergence of Joe Partridge removed all worries. He bowled superbly to take 33 wickets at an average of 19.06. Godfrey Lawrence, almost two metres tall, took 15 wickets in his debut season, but Partridge generally shared the new ball with Bruce McBride, up from Natal, whose 17 wickets cost 20.76. Peter Johnson, in his final season and returning to replace Mansell, was the only front-line spin bowler, taking 19 wickets at an average of 24.63.
