Style
Literally meaning 'Moon Rays' Sanda Kirana is a beautifully designed beach
house that looks south west across the Indian Ocean . Conceived by a leading
Australian architect you enter the premises via a large garden area from
the main 'Galle to Matara' road. From this garden area you climb a few steps
and enter the house through double doors. Immediately upon entering the
villa there lies a fish pond with gently trickling water and the occasional
ripples caused by the several fish. Whilst the pond is the foot of this
villa, the Indian Ocean is its head, and moving around the pond, the full
magnificent view of the breaking waves opens before you. A large swimming
pool is the central feature, on one side of which are the bedrooms and sitting
room whilst the other side is a covered verandha. A small garden at the
front of the villa strewn with coconut trees falls onto a beach that often
features in 'paradise' brochures.

Area
Sanda Kirana sits on a fabulous beach although you cannot swim directly
in front of the villa due to the reef that comes all the way to the shore.
It is however great for strolling along and there are swimming areas nearby
that you can walk to along the beach or take a short ride by tuk tuk. The
world heritage site of Galle Fort is just 8km away and contains a number
of gem and antique shops. Entering the Fort through either the English or
Dutch gates and you seem to enter a different country. The Fort has its
own 'village' atmosphere and its gentle pace is a far cry from the hustle
and bustle of the town. There is a large museum in the Fort that has artifacts
dating back to the 16 century and the time of the Portugese. The oldest
Protestant church in Sri Lanka -dating from 1755 shares the spiritual guidance
of the locals with a Buddhist temple; a beautiful Mosque; aswell as an Anglican
church. Sunset strolls around the ramparts is a much favoured past time
with the locals although it can get crowded at weekends. The ramparts also
provide a natural grandstand view when a Cricket Test match is being played
on the international ground in Galle. There are one or two great restaurants
in the area that are relaxed and fun as well as serving excellent fayre.
Yoga and massage services can be arranged at the villa although the providers
are limited so this is very much subject to availability and the price can
vary.
