The 300 year old Dutch Fort is located approx. 117kms from Colombo. Enter
through the 'old' Dutch gate or the 'new' English one and be prepared for
yet another experience on this paradise island. Like nowhere else in Sri
Lanka, the Fort enjoys an even more relaxed pace. True to its reputation
as the place where in Biblical times King Soloman obatined gems Galle is
the home of gemstones and jewellery design in Sri Lanka. The abundance of
jewellery shops in and around the Fort provide a shoppers paradise. Galle
is also, and to some more, famous for its international cricket pitch. Watch
a game from the top of the 300 year old Fort ramparts and enjoy the better
views of a test match than at any other test ground in the world. A short
journey by three wheeler takes you to beautiful beaches, one of which is
Unawatuna - 'one of the most beautiful in the world' however the Fort has
its own that are perfect for morning dips whilst sunbathing is not appropriate.
The Fort contains Muslim, Buddhist, and Christian places of worship all
in harmony. A number of restaurants exist and more are being planned.
