Ganguly took over the reins of captaincy from Sachin Tendulkar for the ODI
series against South Africa in India. Success followed immediately as India
took the closely fought series 3-2. He led India in Test cricket for the
first time in Dhaka against Bangladesh. India won the one-off Test match
against the minnows of world cricket. Ganguly went on to lead India to a
1-0 victory in the two Test series against Zimbabwe. With the match-fixing
controversy taking its toll on Indian cricket, Ganguly with the help of
India's first foreign coach John Wright had to take India out of the depths
of gloom. The Australians came to India and stretched their winning streak
after they won the Mumbai Test match. VVS Laxman's heroics and Harbhajan
Singh's magic at Eden Gardens (Ganguly's home-ground!) powered India to a
most astonishing Test victory. Riding on the wave of supreme confidence,
Ganguly led his men to another great victory over the Australians in Chennai.
