Work begins on first Building at Hampshire's New Ground
Robin Smith (Tuesday 1st December 1998) ceremonially started the work on the Nursery Pavilion and
Golf Club House, the first buildings to be constructed at Hampshire County Cricket Club's new
First-class Oval and 'sporting village' site at West End.
Located on the western site of the 150 acre site, these first buildings, which will face each
other across a small, landscaped quadrangle, have been designed to take advantage of the fall
across the land by stepping down towards the Nursery Ground outfield.
The overall concept is of a small, rustic pavilion that has been designed in sympathy with its
natural environment. The building will be clad principally in well-detailed steel frame oak panels
supported by a steel structural frame.
Brian Ford, HCCC's chairman, said "This is a significant moment for our project. We have so far spent
over £5 million creating the infrastructure which has given everyone a clear idea of the vision
of our exciting project and which has already attracted much praise.
