The promotion of Durham to first-class status meant that the number of teams was increased to 21, one of the groups being 6.
To mark the 21st season of the competition, a special award was presented to the Player of the Tournament. Points were given for runs, wickets, catches and stumpings and the total divided by the number of games played. The result was that it was won by Curtly Ambrose whose county, Northamptonshire, failed to progress into the quarter-finals.
