The Indian Under-19 team took on defending champions England at the Colombo Cricket Ground on the 20th of January 1999. The wicket at the Colombo Cricket Ground was on the slower side. The ball did not come on to the bat fluently and strokeplay was hardly the order of the day.

India won the toss and predictably stuck England in to bat. The English batsmen lost wickets at regular intervals and at no point looked like they would post a challenging total. The Indian mediumpacers and spinners alike did an admirable job and England were restricted to 182/9 in their allotted 50 overs. Left arm spinner Anup Dave with 2/33 from hi 8 overs was the most successful of the bowlers.

Chasing 183 was never going to be too hard for the Indian batting line up. If they got a good start that is. Cricket folk lore is filled with stories where modest totals have posed problems to sides batting second. Not on this occasion.

Although the England opening bowlers Harrison and Murtagh did their best to tie down the Indian batsmen, the small total they were defending made it excessively hard for them. Ravneet Ricky used the opportunity to play himself in and grind the bowling. His partner Manish Sharma played more aggressively, taking a few more risks than was necessary. Ricky however, sized up the situation perfectly.

Pacing his innings well, he timed the ball through the gaps with consummate ease. Never attempting anything flashy, Ricky showed the bat maker's label to almost everything that was dished out to him. His innings of 68 included 9 crisply hit boundaries and came to an unexpected end when he was bowled by Murtagh. However, by this point, he and Manish Sharma had put on 134 runs.

The stage was already set for victory and captain Mohammed Kaif in the presence of Manish Sharma guided India to victory without further hiccups. Once again Ravneet Ricky had given India the perfect star..
