In a month where three double centuries were scored in
Test cricket, our winner did not score any, but was partner to one. His
major achievement of the month was to play senior partner to Greg Blewett
in a partnership in the Johannesburg Test, that began on the afternoon of
March 1 and ended on the morning of March 3, all of 385 runs later. He led
the unsuccessful Australian fightback in each innings of the Centurion Park
Test, and ended the month in a big match-winning one-day partnership with
twin brother Mark. Not that unusual a month really.
And it is the fact that this was so typical a month for Steve Waugh is reason enough to warrant his recognition. Acknowledged for nearly two years by Coopers and Lybrand as the best Test batsman, a central figure in many of Australia's mightiest Test victories in recent years. A consistency and determination that no other contemporary "great" batsman is able to reproduce. And the murmurs are starting to grow for his call-up to the Australian captaincy - just in case the job falls vacant... The googler's Player of the Month for March 1997 is Australia's Stephen Rodger Waugh. |
