High and low tech Wisden CricInfo staff - September 22, 2002
Watching the new experiment of using more TV-based technology in Sri Lanka during the ICC Champions Trophy has been exciting - and disappointing. Exciting because the umpires have asked the right questions when they are not sure, and the way the technology's used has been excellent. But disappointing in that they have not employed the snickometer and the Hawk-eye system as well, to take the use of technology to a new level. The first referred decision was excellently handled by Daryl Harper. It was clear that he asked the third umpire to adjudicate whether the ball had pitched outside leg stump or not. Otherwise he clearly felt that it was out if it had pitched in line - good umpiring. The referrals for caught-behinds have been inconclusive, and need the Channel 4 snickometer. Hawk-eye would help on the height of lbws, which I feel is very important. I am sure everyone could agree a certain height on the stumps below which the ball is apparently hitting for a positive decision. I personally believe that Hawk-eye is very accurate, but I can understand why people are sceptical - so if the decision is very tight it could be given not out. It is clearly the future, and if I were an umpire I would have absolutely no qualms in embracing it. Bob Woolmer © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
