New chairman Patel wants Srinath back Wisden CricInfo staff - September 20, 2002
Brijesh Patel, 49, has succeeded Chandu Borde as chairman of India's selection committee, with four new faces joining him on a new-look panel. In one of his first media pronoucements as chief selector, Patel said he would try to convince Javagal Srinath, 33, to return from Test-match retirement to play against West Indies during their forthcoming tour. Srinath had earlier announced his unavailability for Tests, but said he was keen to play in one-dayers - but was dumped by the previous selectors from India's young one-day side as well.
Patel, who has not previously been a national selector, played 21 Tests for India between 1974 and 1977. He was a dashing middle-order batsman who averaged 29.45, and he made one century - 115 not out against West Indies at Port-of-Spain in 1975-76. He will be joined on the selection panel by three former internationals - Kirti Azad, Kiran More and Pranab Roy - and Sanjay Jagdale, an offspinning allrounder for Madhya Pradesh in the 1970s, who is the only surviving member from the previous selection panel. Azad, a member of India's World Cup-winning squad in 1983, played seven Tests before retiring five years later to pursue a career in politics. More was India's first-choice wicketkeeper for 49 Tests between 1986 and 1993, while Roy, the son of Pankaj, played two Tests on tour in England in 1982. Madan Lal, Ashok Malhotra and Shivlal Yadav were all voted off the selection committee. Meanwhile Jagmohan Dalmiya was re-elected as president of the BCCI, while Karunakaran Nair took over as secretary from Niranjan Shah.
