Dalmiya re-elected president Wisden CricInfo staff - September 20, 2002
Jagmohan Dalmiya was unanimously re-elected for another year, his second as the BCCI president, at the 73rd annual general meeting of the BCCI2 in Kolkata. Dalmiya survived recent turmoil in the faction-ridden Indian cricket board, including losing the main sponsor, Sahara India, who backed out after the prolonged ICC contract controversy. Dalmiya's faction ensured complete domination in the new order when S.K.Nair, their candidate, was elected the BCCI secretary to replace Niranjan Shah who belonged to a rival lobby that includes A C Muthiah and Rajsingh Dungarpur, both former BCCI presidents. This year's election was a mild affair compared to the bitter wrangling of last year, when again Dalmiya triumphed inspite of the Muthiah lobby being backed by Sharad Pawar, a powerful Indian politician who is also president of the Maharashtra Cricket Association. Dungarpur has alleged that the BCCI elections have increasingly become a dirty affair. But, unlike last year, no one openly made accusations of candidates buying votes with big money. Despite being the richest cricket board in the world, the BCCI conducts its affairs in a veil of secrecy, with neither players nor the public being provided audited accounts or accountability. "I shall work to the best of my ability to serve the interests of Indian cricket", said Dalmiya who leaves for Colombo on September 30 to discuss the Participation Nations Agreement and Player Terms clauses in the controversial ICC contract. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
