Nailing the bad ball Wisden CricInfo staff - September 18, 2002
Marcus Trescothick's blistering 119 was an object lesson in plundering bad bowling, of which there was plenty. As our graph shows, when the ball pitched on the stumps, Trescothick scored a respectful 15 off 25 balls - equivalent to 3.6 runs per over. But when it pitched outside outside off or leg he made hay, walloping 104 runs off 77 balls - or 8.1 an over. Douglas Hondo (23 off 12 balls) took the harshest punishment, and none of the bowlers went for less than five an over against Trescothick. At one stage he slapped seven fours in 11 balls. Despite two huge slog-swept sixes, Trescothick scored 65% on the off side (77 out of 119); by contrast, the figure for Nasser Hussain was only 42%. His fifty came up off 40 balls, and his hundred off only 89. This was Trescothick's seventh score of 50 or more since the NatWest Series in 2001 - and in all seven, the fifty came up at more than a run a ball, an outstanding performance. Even allowing for fielding restrictions, that's an outstanding ratio. And, after his first three one-day international centuries came in England defeats, he finally laid the jinx to rest.
