Ganguly and Kallis on top
Wisden CricInfo staff - September 12, 2002

There have only been two previous versions of the ICC Champions Trophy, or mini World Cup, so there aren't that many performances to consider. But, when we ran the results from Bangladesh 1998 and Kenya 2002 through the Wisden 100 computer, we came up with a familiar name atop the batting list - but a surprising one on top of the bowling. Sourav Ganguly's 141 not out for India against South Africa in the 2000-01 semi-final in Nairobi leads the way. It was against a strong bowling side, and it set up a 95-run Indian victory. In the final, Ganguly managed another hundred - it just misses the top ten by one spot - but was outdone by Chris Cairns, whose 102 not out led New Zealand to their first major one-day title. That innings lies second on the list.

In third is Jacques Kallis's 113 not out for South Africa against Sri Lanka at Dhaka during the first tournament in 1998-99. But Kallis surpasses that with a bowling feat which ends up on top of our table: 5 for 30 against West Indies, also at Dhaka. His spell restricted the total just enough for South Africa to sneak home by four wickets.

In second spot is another man better known for his batting. Sachin Tendulkar's 4 for 38 against Australia at Dhaka in 1998-99 also set up victory. New Zealander Shayne O'Connor, in third place, is the first out-and-out bowler: his 5 for 46 v Pakistan in Nairobi last time was instrumental in another narrow four-wicket victory.
