Wisden ODI 100
Wisden CricInfo staff - September 12, 2002

The last three months haven't been a vintage period for one-day batting. Only one innings was good enough to make it into the Wisden ODI 100: Mathew Hayden's outstanding knock of 146 in 128 balls for Australia against Pakistan in Nairobi. That was a truly matchwinning innings, played against one of the most potent bowling attacks - Shoaib Akhtar, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Abdul Razzaq, Azhar Mahmood and Shahid Afridi, each of whom has taken over 100 one-day wickets. Hayden barges in at 40th position, with a rating of 186.61 points.

India's fine win over England in the NatWest Series final at Lord's threw up two contenders, Mohammad Kaif and Yuvraj Singh. They shared the spoils rather too well for either of them to feature individually in the top hundred, but Kaif's innings did collect almost 150 points. The other innings of note was Herschelle Gibbs's excellent century for South Africa against Pakistan in Morocco. This was worth 162 points - again, not quite enough to break into the Wisden 100.

There was more luck for the bowlers, with four new additions in the top 100. Shoaib Akhtar's 5 for 25 for Pakistan v Australia (155.53 points) hurtled straight in at No. 14, while Scott Styris's 6 for 25 for New Zealand v West Indies (152.84) also broke into the top 20. Shoaib's stunning spell included the highly rated wickets of Ricky Ponting, Damien Martyn, Darren Lehmann (for a duck) and Michael Bevan.

England fans will enjoy Ronnie Irani breaking into the charts at No 91, for his 5 for 26 against India. He's one place - and 0.08 of a point - ahead of Waqar Younis, whose 5 for 38 for Pakistan v South Africa brought him 132.27 points.
