West Indies player killed Wisden CricInfo staff - September 10, 2002
Laurie Williams, the fast-bowling allrounder who played 15 one-day internationals for West Indies between 1996 and 2001, has been killed in a car crash in his native Jamaica. Williams, 33, and his 23-year-old brother Kevin Jennison died when their car went out of control and hit a bus in Portmore, a suburb of the Jamaican capital of Kingston. Police reported that Williams was on his way home on Sunday evening when he swerved to avoid a damaged section of road. His car ended up under the bus. Williams, a medium-pace bowler and lower-order batsman, made his first-class debut for Jamaica against the England tourists in 1989-90. In all he played 58 matches, taking 170 wickets with a best of 6 for 26, and 2002 runs at 24.71, with three centuries, including one against the 1996-97 Indian tourists. In his ODI career he managed 124 runs (11.27) and 18 wickets (30.88). He also played league cricket in England for several years. Speaking to the Reuters news agency, Maurice Foster, the former Jamaica and West Indies batsmen, paid tribute to Williams: "The cricket fraternity will be saddened by his untimely and tragic death. He has been an important part of the success story of Jamaica and West Indies teams in the past." Jamaica's sports minister Portia Simpson Miller added: "I am shocked by his death. "I just cannot believe this. Laurie represented Jamaica and the West Indies well and at all times was committed to the game."
