India at full strength Wisden CricInfo staff - September 9, 2002
"The problem has been sorted out with the players and the International Cricket Council," said Jagmohan Dalmiya, the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). "We will go to Colombo with our best team." The decision was arrived at after a day of hectic consultations between ICC and Dalmiya, which culminated with a telephone conference with officials of all the other 11 participating teams. The Indian players had initially refused to sign sponsorship contracts that prevented them from endorsing products that conflicted with the official sponsors for 30 days after the event. ICC, however, agreed that the contracts would be valid only for 16 days after the tournament ends on September 29. Dalmiya said that the BCCI had agreed the pact after ICC said that any "claims made by official sponsors will be borne by the ICC". The team itself is largely the one that carried off the recent one-day NatWest Series in England. The solitary newcomer is Jai Prakash Yadav, a hard-hitting batsman who also bowls medium-pace. Yadav, 28, plays for Railways in domestic cricket, and top-scored with 84 in the final when they won the Ranji Trophy for he first time in March 2002.
