Indian players face shut-out Wisden CricInfo staff - September 7, 2002
In a move clearly aimed at avoiding future problems with ICC, the official sponsors and the other national cricket boards, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) insisted that the players agree to the 30-day moratorium on airing advertisements of their personal sponsors. After a four-hour meeting in New Delhi, the executive committee of the BCCI gave the players till Monday to sign the contract. Jagmohan Dalmiya, president of the Indian board, offered to compensate the players for any loss suffered by them. The players had earlier reached an agreement with ICC in which the 30-day exclusion period had been reduced to 18. Fearing that the sponsors or the other national boards might claim damages resulting from this agreement, the BCCI had asked for a blanket indemnity from any claim that might be made in the future against it or ICC in relation to the Champions Trophy, but the cricket boards of other nations had rejected this request.
Dalmiya also said that the squad for the Champions Trophy would be selected on Monday in Kolkata. He also clarified that the other contentious issue, regarding the use of the players' images, had been resolved. Three of the four official sponsors had given in writing that they would not call on the Indian players, while South African Airways, the fourth sponsor, "has said they are not interested in players of countries other than South Africans."
