Clarke gets England call-up Wisden CricInfo staff - September 6, 2002
England have drafted Rikki Clarke, Owais Shah and Dominic Cork into their injury-blighted squad for the Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka. They replace Paul Collingwood, Michael Vaughan and Craig White, who have all withdrawn in recent days.
Clarke's call-up caps a remarkable first season in first-class cricket, in which he was named as the Cricket Writers Club's Young Cricketer of the Year last week. "He is a young player of enormous promise and this is a good opportunity for him to test himself at a higher level," said David Graveney, England's chairman of selectors.
Clarke, 20, has played 10 first-class games for Surrey in which he has scored 711 runs at 50.78 and taken 11 wickets at 41.00. In 14 one-day matches this season he has scored 362 runs at 32.90 and taken nine wickets at 45.77.
"I found out a couple of days ago that there was a possibility and now I'm over the moon," he said. "It's a dream to be with England at the end of the year. I've come a long way this season, but it's definitely helped having experienced players around me at Surrey, they've given me plenty of advice."
England have now been forced to make five changes to the original squad. Last month James Kirtley was brought in to replace Darren Gough, and last week Ian Blackwell was called-up to replace Andrew Flintoff.
Shah's inclusion will give him a chance to re-establish himself in the one-day side after falling out of favour despite scoring 57 in his last ODI in New Zealand in March. "Owais Shah was a member of the one-day squad last winter but only had limited opportunities to impress," said Graveney. "He has shown he can succeed in international cricket and the trip to Sri Lanka will give him a further chance to press his claims for a regular place in our one-day line-up."
