A rout
Wisden CricInfo staff - September 4, 2002

Australia 121 for 1 (19.1 overs; Hayden 59*) beat Pakistan 117 all out (32.3 overs; Lee 4 for 32, McGrath 3 for 15) by nine wickets
scorecard

Just days after thumping Pakistan by a massive 224 runs, Australia dished out another fearsome beating at the Nairobi Gymkhana. Brett Lee and Glenn McGrath skittled them for 117, and then Australia marauded to victory with nine wickets and a staggering 30.5 overs to spare. It really is hard to believe that Pakistan won a three-match one-day series in Australia in two months ago.

Pakistan were in real trouble from the start, with McGrath and Jason Gillespie reducing them to 24 for 3, before Lee came on to flatten the middle order. He got Saeed Anwar with a brute of a delivery that lifted and took the edge, and later fired out Shahid Afridi, Azhar Mahmood and Rashid Latif.

Only Misbah-ul-Haq, with a flashy 39, made an impact as a batting line-up missing Yousuf Youhana and Inzamam ul-Haq was made to look club class by an Australian bowling attack that has been relentless throughout the tournament. At one point Pakistan were 68 for 8 before Misbah and Waqar Younis struck some lusty blows in a face-saving ninth-wicket partnership of 44.

McGrath was accurate as always, picking up the wickets of Shoaib Malik and Younis Khan in the same over. Adam Gilchrist took two catches behind the stumps, overtaking Ian Healy's one-day world record of 194 victims in the process.

After the assault, came the battery. Matthew Hayden, who clubbed 146 against Pakistan on Friday, smacked nine fours in an unbeaten 48-ball 59 here, and Australia sped to 121 for 1 off only 19.1 overs.

There were a couple of casualties along the way. Pakistan lost Shoaib Akhtar, who left the field after bowling 1.4 overs with a pulled hip muscle. And Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who was 21 not out at lunch, failed to return after the break, opting instead to rest a leg injury. It really was that easy for the Aussies.
