SA agreement leaves India alone Wisden CricInfo staff - September 3, 2002
The United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCB) have confirmed that the squad chosen for the ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka have finally agreed to sign the necessary agreements. The news leaves India as the only country whose first-choice players have yet to agree to the contracts. "Agreement was reached between the UCB and the South African Cricketers' Association (SACA) at a meeting between Gerald Majola, UCB chief executive, and Tony Irish, SACA chief executive in Cape Town today," the UCB announced. "We took up the negotiations where we left off last week, and continued to discuss the items that were on the table then. We have reached agreement on those issues." said a relieved Majola. "I am pleased to confirm that South Africa will send its best available team to the ICC Champions Trophy and that the players have agreed to sign the player terms agreements." He went on to say that there remained some outstanding issues which needed to be addressed on the team's return from the tournament and that negotiations would continue to try and avoid any similar disagreement ahead of the World Cup. "The agreement also incorporates the ICC's resolution on Saturday that in future players and their representatives will be consulted for the drafting of similar contracts," he explained.
