Australia romp to victory Wisden CricInfo staff - September 2, 2002
Close Australia 85 for 2 (Hayden 40*) beat Kenya 84 (McGrath 3-8, Gillespie 3-40) Australia needed just 17 overs to wrap up an eight-wicket win over Kenya, to continue their dominance of the Tri-series tournament in Nairobi. Glenn McGrath, as ever, led the rout, taking 3 for 8 in eight overs as Kenya folded for 84, their lowest-ever total in a one-day international. It might have been even worse, as McGrath and Jason Gillespie sliced through the top-order to leave Kenya reeling at 17 for 6, but Brijal Patel clung on for a brave 28 in 65 balls, and Tony Suji returned to the middle after being clattered on the helmet by McGrath. Australia made one change to the side that had destroyed Pakistan by 224 runs, recalling Brett Lee in place of Andy Bichel. Lee, however, had to wait patiently for his piece of the action, though he was eventually rewarded with the wicket of Martin Suji after seven tight overs. Australia broke the back of the chase by reaching 44 for 1 after ten overs at lunch. Adam Gilchrist fell for a rapid 22 to the deserving Martin Suji, who conceded just 25 runs in his eight overs, while Jimmy Maher missed out on a chance for cheap runs, managing just 5 in 18 balls before being dismissed by Joseph Angara. Matthew Hayden, however, steered Australia home with an unbeaten 40.
