AMP AFL Challenge Trophy Surrey CCC Media Release - 6 September 2002
Surrey County Cricket Club and the Australian Football League (AFL) are delighted to announce that they will host an AFL game at the AMP Oval this year. The Essendon Bombers and Richmond Tigers will be competing for the AMP AFL Challenge Trophy at the AMP Oval on Saturday October 12th. Paul Sheldon Surrey CCC Chief Executive stated: "Surrey are very pleased to have reached this agreement with the AFL and to bring Aussie Rules to London and the UK again." AMP who are Surrey's Club and Ground Sponsors have recently launched a substantial brand awareness campaign in the UK and this Sponsorship cements the link between AMP's UK and Australian connections. AFL Chief Executive Officer Wayne Jackson said he was delighted two traditional and powerful clubs would showcase this year's international match at the AMP Oval. "Essendon has the most premierships in our game through more than a century of competition while Richmond has been one of the pillars of the AFL for more than 90 years with their massive support," he said. "Kevin Sheedy, one of the legends of our game, made his name at Richmond as a player before forging a great coaching career at Essendon and it is fitting that one of the true visionaries in the expansion our game can take his message to London." Alan Copping AMP Sponsorship Manager stated: "We are pleased to support this Challenge Trophy and are looking forward to an exciting game". © Surrey CCC
