In a season that has featured no shortage of surprises, none were more surprising than the 2-wicket victory of Ashdod 'A' over Lions Lod on Saturday. Both traditional powerhouses of the local game, they have enjoyed very contrasting seasons. Lod top the table and look the best outfit in the country at present, whereas Ashdod had a dismal start to the season, and at one stage were facing the threat of relegation. But they have showed a revival of form over the past few weeks, and the win over Lod extended their winning streak to three matches.
The game was hardly an exhibition of quality cricket. Lod, batting first, slumped to 83 all out in just 29 overs as Gershon Wasker took 4 for 29, and Menashe Waduker (3 for 18) and Hillel Awasker (3 for 14) were also amongst the wickets. Any thoughts Ashdod may have had of an easy win were soon dashed, as wickets began tumbling in their run chase. But Wasker completed an excellent all-round performance, top scoring with 19 as Ashdod scraped to victory with just 2 wickets standing. Janeth (3 for 17), Yefet Nagavkar (2 for 15) and David Massil (2 for 18) all enjoyed success for Lod with the ball.
Despite the defeat, Lod can be very proud to have finished top of the league stage of the season, and go into the semi-finals as favourites for the title.
