Why England need Nasser Wisden CricInfo staff - October 21, 2002
Against Namibia on Wednesday, Alec Stewart became the first man in history to captain over a spread of four World Cups (he was in full charge in 1999, and filled in for Graham Gooch in a couple of games in 1991-92). It's a nice honour for the oldest swinger in town – but England must be relieved that Nasser Hussain is fit for tomorrow's crunch match against Pakistan at Cape Town. Stewart and Hussain have both lost 25 one-day internationals as captain … but Hussain has won 12 more than Stewart, whose by-numbers captaincy style has often left England searching wistfully for a Plan B. When you consider the cliché about perfect preparation giving a team "that extra one or two per cent", a swing of 14% is a pretty big one by anyone's standards.
