A new world order? Wisden CricInfo staff - October 28, 2002
Perhaps the world order is slowly changing. Whereas Australia have dominated the PWC rankings for several years, it is now South Africans who are beginning to make their mark. Both countries have three bowlers each in the top ten, while Australia have three batsmen and South Africa two. The rise of Michael Vaughan continued following his Man of the Match hundred at Sydney, a performance which meant he leapfrogged Jacques Kallis into second place in the latest PwC ratings. Vaughan has now achieved the highest rating for an England player since Graham Gooch ten years ago, and one of the highest achieved by any England batsman since the 1950s. The Australians' defeat in the fifth Test resulted in Matthew Hayden's lead at the top of the batting list being cut from 43 points to just 10, and Ricky Ponting dropped three places to ninth. Bucking the trend was Adam Gilchrist – his century helped him into fourth place. The top five bowlers remained unchanged, but there were two big risers. Andy Caddick's first ten-wicket haul sent him up nine places into sixth spot and Makhaya Ntini also jumped nine places into eighth after his excellent series against Pakistan.
