The secret of our success
Wisden CricInfo staff - October 20, 2002

Sourav Ganguly explained that having more than one potential match-winner in the side was the secret of India's recent resurgence. "Harbhajan is not the only match-winner in the side," he said. "There are quite a few in the team now and that's the key to our success. There is more than one player in the team capable of winning the match for us, like Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif. That's the strength of our side.

"Everyone played a part in the victory here. The team's form has been very good. We batted and bowled very well in this game."

For Ganguly, it was a bittersweet victory as he was carried off after colliding with Anil Kumble. "I injured my back and have been given two injections. The back is numb now and I will go for an MRI scan," he explained. He is, however, expected to be fit for the third and final Test starting at Kolkata on October 30.

Ganguly also said more technology should be used in Test cricket to avoid umpiring mistakes. "With so much of crowd and noise around, the umpires cannot always be correct," said Ganguly, who fell to debatable leg-before decisions in both of his innings. "We have got to make more use of the technology. It was used on a trial basis during the Champions Trophy in Colombo. I hope it also comes to Test cricket."

A glum Carl Hooper was making no excuses for his side's performance. "It was hard to find any positives," he said. "It's a shame that we've come to this level. We're just not playing good cricket. There was no problem with the pitch because we've played on much more difficult wickets in India.

"It's more disappointing than the last Test," he admitted. "There we batted second, but here we had the chance to make first use of the wicket, but did not. We dropped at least 12 catches in two Tests and you're always going to struggle after conceding a 150-run lead."
