West Indies v South Africa, 2000-01 Wisden CricInfo staff - October 9, 2002
At Port-of-Spain, May 12. South Africa won by 53 runs. Toss: West Indies. International debut: A. Nel.
The home bowlers earned West Indies the chance to pull one back, dismissing South Africa for 190 in the final over. But runs were hard to come by on a two-paced pitch, and a sell-out crowd of 25,000 had their hopes dashed as West Indies' last eight wickets tumbled for 40 inside 15 overs. McKenzie and Kemp provided the backbone of South Africa's innings with a stand of 92 that began during Cuffy's mean ten-over spell of two for 26. Lara held the key to the West Indian reply. Once he was run out by Rhodes's direct hit from mid-wicket, and Chanderpaul, without a boundary in 84 balls, was stumped after losing patience, the effort folded. The previous day, the South African board had announced it was fining five players for smoking marijuana; pointedly, all five played here, with Andre Nel taking three wickets on international debut.
