Western Province 'B' win by 170 runs
Peter le Grange - 27 October 2002

There was little charity for the Border B team at Constantia on the final day of their UCB Bowl match against hosts Western Province B on a sunny but windswept Sunday. The home side's bowlers first rallied around wicket-keeper Wesley Euley to add 123 in the morning session, and had the luxury of declaring at lunch. This after they had been in a desperate position on the second evening as Geoff Love and Warwick Hinkel spun them to distraction.

Border continued with the spinners. Love was to bowl through the session, but Hinkel struggled to control his leg spinners as he bowled with a gusting south-easter behind his back. Love claimed both wickets to fall, but the tenth wicket pair of Rory Kleinveldt and Mark de Stadler added an unbeaten 41 before lunch, at which point Jonno McLean declared, leaving Border a target of 265 in a minimum of 71 overs.

Kleinveldt and de Stadler continued to wreck Border's hopes in tandem, this time with the new ball. The top order was polished up in double quick time, and any hopes of victory evaporated when first innings heroes Michael Matika and Abongile Sodumo were dismissed in the same over by Kleinveldt. Captain Justin Kreusch did his best to hold the innings together until he fell attempting to sweep Jean-Paul Duminy's occasional off spinners. It was all over 25 minutes after tea as the last three wickets fell on 94, giving WP victory by 170 runs with 30 overs to spare.

SA Under 19 player Kleinveldt, who bowled all but four overs from the False Bay end, claimed six wickets to confirm his rising star status, while de Stadler continued to impress with his control.
