Rain rescues Bangladesh Wisden CricInfo staff - November 29, 2002
Match abandoned between West Indies 275 for 7 (Powell 88, Ganga 44) and Bangladesh 90 for 4 (Ashraful 29, Drakes 4-26) in 17 overs Rain came to Bangladesh's rescue after West Indies reduced them to 90 for 4 after 17 overs, needing 276 to win. As 25 overs had not been completed in the Bangladesh innings, the match was abandoned. Much was expected of Jermaine Lawson, West Indies' tearaway fast bowler who was so impressive in India, but it was Vasbert Drakes who did the damage. Drakes ran through the Bangladesh top order, taking 4 for 26 in his eight overs. Mohammad Ashraful made 29 off 25 balls with four fours and a six, but Alok Kapali, unbeaten on 20, was the player who impressed. One of his strokes, a paddle-sweep for four, was positively Tendulkaresque. But that brief glimpse of finesse from Kapali would not be the dominant memory of the day; Ricardo Powell's sloggacious 88 would. Bangladesh had bowled valiantly to restrict West Indies to 142 for 4 in the 36th over, but Powell launched a ferocious assault, hitting six sixes and seven fours in his innings, which took up only 51 balls. Ashraful, in particular, got a lot of stick from him – his nine overs went for 71 runs. Earlier Khaled Masud, Bangladesh's captain, had won the toss and opted to field. The pitch was true and had good bounce, and Manjural Islam and Tapash Baisya got a fair amount of purchase with the new ball. Chris Gayle, Wavell Hinds, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Daren Ganga all got starts, but none of them could go on for a big one. In the middle overs Naimur Rahman, an offspinner recalled into the side, tied down West Indies with figures of 0 for 30 from his 10 overs. But the script changed once Powell walked in to bat.
