Hope springs eternal

Bangladesh kick off a three-match one-day series against West Indies in Chittagong tomorrow (Nov 29), with both sides looking to fine-tune their preparations for next year's World Cup. A high-scoring match is on the cards on the easy-paced pitch at the MA Aziz Stadium in the port city of Chittagong. The remaining two one-dayers will be played under lights in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka on Monday and Tuesday.

The West Indians are confident of a clean sweep after defeating India 4-3 in the rousing seven-match series which ended last week. "This is an important series for us since it is our last before the World Cup in February," said Ridley Jacobs, who is standing in as captain for the injured Carl Hooper. "We want to make best use of this opportunity."

Bangladesh's captain Khaled Masud, meanwhile, hoped that the experience of playing in South Africa last month will hold his team in good stead. "The tour was a good learning experience," he said, "and the positive manner in which the young boys played gives me added confidence."

Bangladesh have only ever won three one-day internationals – and only one of those was against a Test-playing nation. They beat Kenya in 1998, before beating Scotland in the 1999 World Cup. And shortly after that they landed a controversial win over Pakistan, in the same competition. Their other 55 ODIs have ended in defeat, including each of their last 23 – an unwanted record.

Masud says he will be happy if his team could confine West Indies to 80 runs in the first 15 overs, when the field restrictions are in place.

The match will be watched by Sir Vivian Richards, the former batting legend who's now West Indies' chief selector. His old sparring partner Gordon Greenidge – the former Test opener who had a spell as Bangladesh's coach – will also be there: he is commentating on the match for television.

The one-day series will be followed by two back-to-back Test matches at Dhaka and Chittagong.
