Gough avoids the knife
Wisden CricInfo staff - November 28, 2002

Darren Gough remains hopeful of resuming his career in 2003, after initially fearing that it might be over. Persistent knee problems have sidelined him for over a year and caused him to undergo three operations. He was a risky choicefor the current Ashes tour, but returned home without playing a game earlier this month once it was clear that he stood no chance of regaining fitness in time to play a meaningful part.

The good news is that a consultation with Richard Steadman – the American orthopaedic surgeon who has revived the careers of footballers Alan Shearer and Jamie Redknapp, among others – has revealed that there is no need for further remedial surgery.

Gough expressed extreme relief at the news. "I'm really pleased. I thought I would have to have surgery, but the doctor said I didn't need it, just rehab. I'm not sure where I'm going to do the work, and I can't run yet, but obviously I'm pleased."

Gough, 32, has been England's leading bowler for almost a decade, with 228 wickets from 56 Test appearances, and will be sorely missed as they attempt to salvage some pride from a miserable tour Down Under, before heading off to the World Cup.

However, if the Steadman treatment works, English fans can hope to see him back in time for South Africa's tour of England next summer.
